I can’t help but feel a bit for Russell Brand’s “does it all” wife

Rather sexist? Russell Brand

I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for Russell Brand. I’d even go as far as to say I have a little bit of a crush on him.

I follow him on Instagram. I often watch his YouTube channel. When he wrote about becoming a dad for the first time, I thought it was one of the sweetest things I’d ever read.

But his latest ramblings about how he parents his two daughters (Mabel and Peggy, both under three) has left me wondering if he is, in fact, a bit of a prat.

He says he is “very, very focused on the mystical connections of Mabel’s beauty and grace. Not so good on the nappies and making sure that they eat food.”

When asked outright about his involvement in the day-to-day parenting of his children, he responded, “Laura [his wife] does all of it. It turns out that she is extremely well versed in the nuances and complexities of child rearing.

“She wouldn’t go away for 24 hours, Laura. She respects and cares for their safety too much.

He grew up all over Essex, became a pro footballer and TV presenter, had two children with reality TV star Jade Goody, then after her death, became a life coach. While juggling all this Jeff Brazier managed to take the time to chat to me about grief, Canvey FC and secret vices…

Where is your favourite place in Essex, and why?

I have great memories of living in Matching Green, it’s a bit of a hidden gem. It’s beautiful. It’s probably about five miles from where I live now so it’s very accessible and it’s got a wonderful pub called the Chequers that we have the most incredible meals at. To be honest I love going back there to just collect my thoughts. I sit by the cricket pitch or walk around there. It’s my kind of home from home really.

What’s your favourite Essex memory?

I played at Canvey and it was good because we were a very good team. I think we won the Ryman One that first year. I was a 19-year-old lad amongst a load of retired ex-pros. I learned a lot and not just about football, let’s put it that way! Continue reading →

Father’s Day fun: Playing through the puking

What did Sonny Jim get his dada for Father’s Day? Norovirus. That’s what.

After having spent two nights puking, the little pickle (now thankfully on the mend) thought it only fair to share with his daddy – and me!

So, it hasn’t quite been the Father’s Day I wanted for Gary, though it’s probably not one he’ll forget and am sure he will remind Sonny Jim of when he’s bigger.

But anyway. Here’s what I wrote before projectile vomit hit my little family. And it’s even more true now. There’s nothing that will make you feel more like a daddy than cleaning sick off the cot. And the sofa. And the floor. While your puke-covered missus gives your child his third bath of the night. It’s not glam. It’s not fun. But it is love. Continue reading →

Daddy gets to grips with some baby massage!

I have to admit I was a little dubious about Basking Babies’ Baby Massage for Dads class, I thought it very much sounded like something “for Mums”.

Nevertheless I agreed to give it a whirl, and I’m glad I did, as the little lad loved it!

As part of the Basking Babies holistic health and happiness programme the 90-minute session took place in instructor Becca’s front room in Leigh-on-Sea. Fellow instructor Lianne ran the session. The mums can come along too and enjoy a cup of tea and cake (and a chat) in the kitchen while the dads get down to business. Continue reading →
