Top baby names of 2016 revealed!

popular baby namesThe most popular boys’ and girls’ baby names of 2016 in the UK have been revealed, with Oliver becoming the number one choice for boys and Olivia top for girls.

The research, conducted by global parenting site BabyCentre, showed Oliver had jumped a place to become the most popular name for boys, followed by Muhammed, Noah, Harry and Jack.

Lily (third most popular last year) was 2016’s second popular girls name, followed by Sophia, Emily, Amelia and new entry Ava.

BabyCentre‘s results suggest more new parents are taking inspiration from sci-fi, the great outdoors, royalty and the worlds of celebrity and showbiz when it comes to their childrens’ name choices.

Traditional, nature-inspired names like Daisy and Poppy have all seen their positions rise within the top 50.

Prince George’s moniker has risen four places to take a spot in the top ten for the first time since 2012, while his little sister’s name – Charlotte – shot up ten places.

Jamie Oliver’s name choice for his baby boy, River, saw more babies called River than ever before, while Harper, Beckham’s daughter’s name, is still a popular choice and is one of 2016’s biggest risers, up 31 places to number 56.

Ezra, from spin-off animation Star Wars Rebels, has had a meteoric rise, entering the top 100 for the first time in 2016.
